Movie Review: Turning Point 2: Laughing Gor Returns

Honestly, I have no idea what Turning Point was all about. I actually watched this movie for the very first time. Let's just say, it's totally not what I expected. At all.

The main lead of this movie is obviously, Laughing Gor, played by Michael Tse. Francis Ng played a former professor, Fok Tin Yam, and some sort of a criminal psychologist/psychiatrist. Main casts also included Bosco Wong, Kate Tsui, Kara Hui, Chapman To and Janice Man.

This movie dealt with numerous flashbacks, obviously in tie with the earlier series, Lives of Omission. There were also lots of theories being thrown in, what is considered black and white, whether law is justified and so on and so forth. I find the professor's belief quite interesting, albeit a little twisted in a way that he was willing to sacrifice people for his cause. Between Laughing Gor and Fok Tin Yam's beliefs, I'm actually leaning more towards the professor's view. The character, Laughing Gor, failed to impress me with his moral belief and I find him a quintessential policeman, someone that could only see black or white, not the gray line. From my point of view, there were times where the law was unable to uphold justice, and this was why some people actually resorted to crime, for the sake of justice and fairness. For example, in Arthur Miller's play, A View from the Bridge, Marco, one of the illegal immigrants, was snitched and never be able to go to America to find jobs. The fact that he actually entered illegally was to find money for the sake of his family that were starving in poverty in Italy. Eddie, the main character who snitched on him, would be consider a loyal citizen in the eyes of law. However, his Italian community would forever see him as a traitor of their own kind and that he was in the wrongs. Marco wanted to get justice yet Eddie did not do no wrong. In the end, Marco killed Eddie. Justice was served, however, Marco would most probably be arrested for killing a person. Moral of the story? To get justice, you may have to break the law. Yet for the justice you yearn for, you may be prosecuted for the crime you had to commit.

Perhaps another reason why I'm not impressed with the main lead was due to the actor being overshadowed by the strong performance by Francis Ng. Honestly, at times, I even forgot that this movie was about Laughing Gor and thought it's more about Fok Tin Yam. I actually thought the other main casts had more screen time compared to the main lead himself.

I would give this movie a rating of 2 out of 10. This movie was just not my cup of tea. It left me confused, bewildered and not to mention, annoyed.

Bookmarks, Bookmarks... and tons of Bookmarks

As a normal human being, I like to procrastinate. It's just a human instinct, to procrastinate. Some people may have mild case, others not so. Some people actually have good control and was able to complete the task as soon as possible, others, like yours truly, does not have good control over the overpowering feeling of laziness, troublesome-ness and procrastination. As a result, lots of work and chores had been pushed back, even personal interest. I even procrastinate while surfing the Internet. That is how serious the situation I'm currently in. I tend to open too many tabs (extremely bad habit of mine) and ended up opening too many windows (a recently acquired bad habit, thanks to Chrome's swiftness). By the end of the day, I would like to open the tabs again. However, it was too much that I just lazily save all tabs in a new folder as bookmarks. And did I actually re-opened those tabs the next day? Surprise surprise, I don't. The folder kept increasing, the bookmark links was never-ending and I ended up with too many tabs that I don't even know how to organize.

Reasons why I love to bookmark every damn site I visit were:
1) fear of forgetfulness of potentially useful sites
2) for the sake of whenever I'm bored, I would just browse through the bookmarks and see whichever links caught my interest
3) for interest or hobby
4) to gain knowledge
5) for future references
6) to save all the data I encountered
7) just for the heck of it

I used to use Mozilla and God knows how much bookmarks I got there. Let me give you a hint, it's more than one thousand. Now, I'm a converted Chrome user and would not want to suffer the pain of scrolling down tons of bookmarks that may or may not be useless. So I leveled up and discovered it was much more easier to create so many folders. Alas, the number of bookmarks in Chrome are increasing as we speak. Nevertheless, I tried to change my ways and during my free time, I would see which links were broken already or for sites I saved for references in my assignments, I would save the links in Word Document. I still haven't decided what to do with the rest of my bookmarks once I'm through with them.

I had Google-d about people that are in the same situation with me, and I actually managed to find few links pertaining to this matter. The advice that had been given were quite enlightening and I'm trying my best to adapt to those methods. I shall update this blog in the future about this quest and what are the progress or results and lesson learned.

Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

I really love the first Sherlock Holmes film. Therefore, it came no surprise that I would be looking forward to the sequel. Let's just say the sequel, do excuse my language, but the sequel is just...

PURELY SHEER FUCKING BAD-ASSESRY AND KICK-ASSEDLY DAMN AWESOMEEEEEE!!!

Anyways, do be warned of spoilers below.

Due to my short-term memory span, I may forgot some of the most awesome details of the film. Also, with my lack of understanding on films and its effects and cinematography, I wouldn't be able to express it well in my review. This would be how I would say about the movie in my own simple words.

The movie starred the brilliant Robert Downey Jr. as the ever eccentric titular character, Sherlock Holmes, Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, Noomi Rapace, as the gypsy (and main female character, though she didn't really did much in the movie) Madame Simza Heron, Jared Harris as the main villain Professor James Moriarty, Stephen Fry as Sherlock's brother, Mycroft Holmes, Kelly Reilly as Watson's new bride, Mary and short cameo appearance by Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler.

Some may think the film was too long, however, I actually fail to notice the long duration and thought and felt that each scene were just at the right pace and no draggy parts. There were more action and explosion. One of my favourite part of the movie was during the escaping part from Moriarty's hencemen in Germany. The constant switch between the pace of how the fast or slow the bullets shot through trees. Additionally, similar sequence type included the sequence where Holmes would analyse his opponents next move and what he would do to counter-act. Compared to the first movie, the sequel had more of these type of sequences. The effects were believable, the plot was well-written and the music and soundtracks were excellent.

However, the main reason why I think this movie was just so frigging awesome could be largely due to the characters played by brilliant actors and actresses. Holmes was just so eccentric in his own peculiar way that his antics usually added much humour to the movie. He and Watson just kept on bicker and bicker like a pair of old couple. It was funny when they were both hanging outside the moving train and Watson kicked him shouting that he's on his honeymoon. Sadly, Irene Adler only made a short cameo appearance in this film and the audience was led to believe that she died due to being poisoned by Moriarty. I, on the other hand, thought that this won't be the last of Irene Adler and that she was very much still alive. I mean seriously, she was the perfect woman for Holmes in this series. Instead of her, Simza the gypsy, played by Noomi Rapace, was the female heroine of this film. When I watched the trailer, call me childish or whatever, I was supremely threatened by the fact that Rapace and Holmes had kissed and that she would potentially replace Adler as Holmes new love interest. THANK THE MOVIE GODS THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. The kiss from the trailer was cut from the movie, along with some other parts like the part in the train where Watson put a gun on Holmes face. That dialogue exchange was pretty funny in some ways. Back to Simza, or Sim, her character did not play a major part in the film. This could be due to the editing or writing. Professor Moriarty, on the other hand, is just frigging awesome as the villain. A genius that could rival Holmes' intelligence and wit? I could see that these two men really respect each other, yet they also hate each other for the differing moral views. It was kind of nice to see the main villain to be somewhat low-key and not over the top. Yet, whenever he was talking to Holmes and also that one scene where he talked to Adler, you could hear the threats and menace behind his calm tone. It was almost as if at any moment, he would strike and you didn't even realized it.

I really like the chess game scene where it come down to the final clash between Holmes and Moriarty. They were both completely in tune with each other yet it was satisfying to see Moriarty looked a little taken aback when he realized Holmes had taken his little notebook and confiscated most of his fortunes. Then the final analytic slow motion sequence showed that both of them knew that Moriarty would eventually win the outcome of their physical fight. Thus, Holmes did the opposite and grabbed Moriarty and pushed him till the two of them fall for their deaths from the balcony onto steep waterfall. Watson witnessed this and then we were showed a scene of Holmes' funeral and back to Watson's office where the film started, with him finished with Holmes' story. Mary gave him a parcel, which contained a device that Sherlock had taken a liking to at his brother's place. Suspicious, Watson then went out to ask Mary who sent the parcel. I remember in the beginning of the film, Holmes wore this weird suit in which he actually blended in with the wall. I was actually looking at the wall to see any sign of Holmes. As Watson went out, the camera panned at the arm chair and lo and behold, we could see Holmes' moved. He took off his mask and went behind Watson's typewriter, reading the manuscript, and added a question mark at the end of the word "THE END".

Overall, I really enjoyed this film. I would give it an 8 out of 10. If you enjoyed the first film, then you might as well would be entertained by this sequel.

Movie Review: The Darkest Hour

First post of 2012, and it's a post about movie review. Quite a departure from the norm but oh well.

So today was the submission date of my last assignment, Core Business Skills. Me and my friends decided to hang out and watch movie as a form of reward for the endless sleepless nights we had just to complete our assignments. My friends wanted to watch "The Darkest Hour", which frankly didn't quite get my interest, based on the movie poster itself.

Yes, I'm just dying to watch this. Looks like a nice movie, no? *Yawn*

I really wanted to watch Sherlock Holmes. However, since it's 2 against 1, I gave in.

*SPOILERS, PROCEED WITH CAUTION*

The movie opened with two of the main male characters, Sean and Ben, were going to Moscow for a business deal of their website. It was some kind of GPS system and they were able to see who checked in. Upon arrival on the company's building, they found out that they were back-stabbed by a Sweedish guy named Skyler (nice name, preferred it to be a girl's name though), who stole their idea and treated it as his own. Angered yet unable to do anything, Sean and Ben drowned their sorrows in a night club. The two dudes decided to chat with two girls, an American girl (Natalie) with her Australian friend (Anne). Suddenly, there was a blackout and everyone went out to see what happened. Now this was when the movie became absolutely random.

Everyone gathered outside and saw strange orange lights that were floating and filling up the Moscow's sky. One of the lights went down to the ground and disappeared. A policeman tried to poke it with his baton. Upon contact, he was immediately shred into dust. And that's when pandemonium broke loose. As more and more of these weird invisible thing settled on the ground, they immediately shred people up. In the end, our four characters and Skyler locked themselves in the basement of the night club for days. They wanted to go to the U.S. Embassy for help. There, not a visible human that was alive. However, they found out some clues of survivors. As the movie progressed, they met up with another survivor, a Russian girl named Vika and a scientist, Mr. Sergei. They found out the clue was that a nuclear submarine will depart with all survivors at the river (which I forgot, I didn't really pay much attention to details of movies I'm not interested at). So, the group's mission was to get on the submarine...

Honestly, after watching the movie, I'm left with an unsatisfied aftertaste. I felt that the movie was absolutely random and pointless. Below is a list of reasons why I think the movie sucks in my point of view.

1) In the beginning, there was no buildup of suspense and out of nowhere, strange aliens started attacking  and shredding people into dust. It was totally out of the blue.

2) It was highly predictable on which character was about to die. Only one of the characters death totally caught me unaware. So I guess that's a plus.

3) Some inconsistencies and absolutely lack of logic. At one point, Sean and Ben wanted to warn Skyler to take cover since it was dangerous. One second they were on the top of the building. Immediately after they left, Natalie took the telescope and saw the invisible aliens approaching Skyler and the two guys were already on the ground near Skyler. It's almost as if it took few seconds for the guys to reach down. -.- Bear in mind, the building was pretty high. Even if it's a movie about aliens attacking the world, there should be some ounce of logic left.

4) Sean and Ben concluded that the being was unable to detect them if they hid under the car. So, why didn't they just hid under the car in some of the latter encounters? I believed hiding under the car would be a much better option than just running blindly on the street.

5) The characters lacked character development. What did the characters learned from this invasion? How did it feel to see their dear friends being shred into dust right in front of them? I felt that the characters did not display any significant change in their attitudes throughout the movie. It was all about "we have to get into the frigging submarine" all the way. They did had their moments and mourned for the death of their friends, however, it was brief and fleeting. It did not have any lasting effect on the characters. Maybe I'm too demanding. But that's just an example. Anyways, the lack of character development could be either due to poor writing or due to the actors' inexperience. Frankly speaking, I do not know any of the actors and actresses in the movie. Based from the reviews I had read in the Internet, the actors and actresses are kinda new. The only actor that showed any promising aspect was the actor that acted as Sean, Emile Hirsch. However, it was still not enough.

6) The aliens were kind of a joke. It was pretty cool that these aliens were invisible in the beginning. It's much scarier if you are unable to see what's attacking you. Yet, near the end of the movie where the characters attacked the aliens and we were able to see their true faces, I was like... -.- The aliens turned out to be some weird cartoonish-looking-black-spider-like-creature-with-faces-that-I-would-deemed-almost-comical.

By the end of the movie, it seemed to be playing with the idea of a sequel as a follow-up.

All in all, I would rate this movie 4 out of 10. Though I dislike this movie, I wouldn't go as far as to say this movie sucked like shit because I've seen worse. If you have a stronger suspension of disbelief, you may find this movie to be slightly okay. I mean, my friends kinda like the movie since it was pretty suspenseful and nerve-wrecking. I agreed, which was some of the redeeming qualities of this movie.

P.S. This is my first movie review, so obviously, if you are seeking movie reviews and happened to stumble on my post, sorry if I was unable to really write a proper review. =P
